Our Dog Training Approach: Clear Communication and Practical Results

Effective dog training leverages specific training philosophies and program styles. At Off Leash K9 Training of San Antonio, we use different tools and methods depending on the program and your dog’s age, temperament, and goals.

Our Basic Obedience, Basic and Advanced Obedience, and board and train programs use an e-collar and training leash as communication tools. The e-collar is not a punishment device; it is used to help create clear, consistent communication between you and your dog. Depending on the program, training may include obedience work around distractions, manners, owner handling, and real-world reliability.

Our Pawsitive Puppy programs and Basic Marker Mastery program use reward-based training built around positive reinforcement, markers, clickers, treats, and confidence-building exercises. Reward-based training builds strong bonds by rewarding desired actions with treats or praise, making these programs ideal for young pups and owners who prefer a reward-driven approach.

Owner Education
Training is not limited to teaching the dog. You also learn how to give commands consistently, use the training tools correctly, reinforce skills at home, and maintain progress after the program ends. Inconsistent training can confuse your dog, so we invest time making sure every owner feels confident. Board and train owners receive a detailed turnover lesson so they understand how to handle and maintain the commands taught during training.

Real-World Practice
Our trainers work toward obedience around distractions in practical environments. Depending on the program, training may include work around people, dogs, doorways, manners, and unfamiliar surroundings so your dog can build more reliable responses beyond quiet, controlled settings.

What Alamo Heights Dog Owners Are Saying

Rated 5 out of 5

Michael San Miguel was an absolutely amazing trainer! Not only was he able to train my pup Phoenix but he taught me so much on how to reinforce her training and how to correct it. As a first time dog owner I knew I wanted her to be professionally trained and it was worth every penny! I’m able to take her everywhere I go with me and have gotten so many compliments at how well behave she is! During her two week board & train, Mike took very good care of her and would send me daily updates with cute pictures of their training session. If you are considering training, I HIGHLY recommend Mike from Off-Leash.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Training in Alamo Heights

Do you work with aggressive or reactive dogs?

Yes. We offer behavior modification lessons and an extended behavior modification board and train option for dogs displaying aggression, reactivity, or severe anxiety. Some dogs may require muzzle training. Training can improve control, safety, and management, but we do not guarantee complete elimination of serious aggression. An untrained dog with aggression concerns deserves professional support, not promises that can’t be kept.

Will my dog be trained to behave off-leash?

Off-leash training depends on the selected program and your dog’s individual behavior. The two-week board and train works toward off-leash obedience around distractions. The one-week program does not include off-leash training. Dogs with serious aggression or anxiety may not be candidates for complete off-leash reliability.

What breeds and sizes of dogs do you train?

Our training system is designed for dogs of different breeds, sizes, and ages. We train dogs from small companion breeds to large working breeds, adult dogs and young pups alike. Program recommendations are based on your dog’s temperament, training history, behavior, and your goals.
