Our Dog Training Approach: Clear Communication and Practical Obedience

Off Leash K9 Training of San Antonio uses different tools and training methods based on the program and the dog’s age, because a 10-week-old puppy and a two-year-old reactive adult need different approaches.

Core Adult Obedience Programs

The Basic Obedience, Basic and Advanced Obedience, and standard board and train programs use an e-collar and training leash as communication tools, not as punishment. These tools help support clearer communication between the handler and the dog as commands are practiced around distractions. Our trainers also teach owners how to use the tools correctly and consistently.

Reward-Based Programs

For puppies and dogs starting with reward-focused foundations, we offer the Basic Marker Mastery program and the Pawsitive Puppy Lesson Program. These programs use positive reinforcement, markers, clickers, treats, and confidence-building exercises to teach skills like Come, Sit, Place, and loose-leash walking. Positive reinforcement is a key method in effective dog training, and it’s especially powerful for building trust with young or timid dogs.

Owner Education

Training isn’t just about teaching your dog-it’s about teaching you. In every program, owners learn how to:

  • Give commands consistently
  • Use the training tools correctly
  • Reinforce skills at home
  • Maintain progress after the program ends
  • Incorporate training into everyday routines

Board and train owners receive a detailed two-hour turnover lesson so they understand how to handle their dog and continue building on the results. You do not need to set aside a specific amount of time every day to train your dog. Our team teaches you how to incorporate training into your normal daily routine through walks, commands, structure, and everyday interactions.

Common Dog Behavior Problems We Address in Balcones Heights

Leash Pulling, Lunging, and Reactivity

Structured leash training improves focus, walking control, and handler communication while helping owners manage reactivity safely and confidently.

Jumping and Poor Greeting Manners

Commands, structured greetings, and impulse-control exercises help dogs greet visitors calmly and behave better at doors and in shared spaces.

Dog-on-Dog or Dog-on-Human Aggression

Behavior modification builds safer control, clearer communication, and better management for dogs showing aggression, fear, or severe reactivity.

Anxiety, Timidness, and Low Confidence

Confidence-building and behavior modification help anxious or timid dogs improve communication, control, and comfort through patient practice.

Poor Recall and Distraction Problems

Recall, Heel, Place, and distraction training help dogs respond more reliably around squirrels, other dogs, and busy real-world environments.

What Dog Owners Are Saying About Off Leash K9 Training

Rated 5 out of 5

Michael San Miguel worked wonders with my Maui who has aggression issues. In fact, I questioned whether Maui could be trained.  While he was very loving with our immediate family, he did not trust strangers and would fight with canine siblings. The dog Michael brought back to me obeys commands, doesn’t need a leash and is so much more relaxed and confident.  Michael knew my worries and texted me the big wins along the way, as well as the nightly report card. I couldn’t wait to see what daily  progress he made, and I was never disappointed. Very thankful for Michael’s compassion, love for dogs and positive attitude. He made all the difference!!!  And Maui’s daily smiles and happy tail wags told me he appreciated Michael, too. Best money spent. Ever!

We could not be more pleased with the 2 week board and train program. We enrolled 2 six month old pups with Christine. Apollo and Nova are newfypoos that we wanted basic and advanced obedience training for. These pups will continue their training to become therapy dogs for a hospital system so it was extremely important they had a firm foundation of obedience and distraction training. Christine and her training did not disappoint. We were given daily report cards along with multiple pictures and videos to watch each days progress. She treats the dogs as they were her very own. I would highly recommend her and the program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Training in Balcones Heights

What dog training programs do you offer in Balcones Heights?

We offer Basic Obedience private lessons, Basic & Advanced Obedience lessons, one-week and two-week board and train programs, Behavior Modification Lessons, Behavior Modification Board and Train, puppy training consultations and programs, Basic Marker Mastery, Online Puppy Training, and Therapy Dog Development. Contact us for a free phone consultation to find the right fit for your dog.

At what age should I start puppy training?

Puppies under five months can begin with clicker, marker, treat, and reward-based methods that are appropriate for young dogs. E-collar training generally does not begin until a dog is at least five months old. The appropriate program depends on your puppy’s age, development, and training goals, and our team can help you determine the best starting point.

How long does dog training take?

The timeline depends on the program. Basic Obedience includes four one-on-one hour lessons. Basic & Advanced Obedience includes eight one-on-one hour lessons. The standard adult board and train options include a one-week program and a two-week program. The Behavior Modification Board and Train includes two one-hour sessions before boarding, three weeks of board and train, and one follow-up session two weeks after boarding. The Pawsitive Puppy Lesson Program includes five lessons. Progress depends on the dog, program, and owner follow-through.

Is board and train better than private lessons?

Neither format is automatically better. It depends on your goals, schedule, and your dog’s needs. Private lessons are ideal for owners who want to participate directly throughout the training process and build handling skills alongside their dog. Board and train provides a more immersive experience where the dog stays and trains with a professional trainer. A free phone consultation can help determine the better fit for your family.
